The night the lights went out in Georgia
Genarlow Wilson, while a 17 year-old high school football star, succumbed to the advances of a 10th grade girl. A Georgia judge sentenced him to ten years in jail. It really is a horrible story.
There are a lot of people in jail because police, prosecutors and judges make mistakes. Wilson is in jail because all these people mindlessly, or perhaps meanly, complied with the letter of an idiotic law.

"Succumbed"? Why does there have to be someone to blame? Normally the objection to statutory rape laws is that they negate the consent of teenage girls in cases where boys would be considered to have such powers. I don't think we need to go looking for a villian here . . . even a (gasp!) sexually active 15 year old girl.

DF82: I gather from the story that the governor in Georgia does not have pardon power.
I have to say, I felt physically ill reading that story. The prosecutor in that case is presented as being a proud and wicked man. It's hard not to bring up all the old stereotypes, and ask: would the (white) prosecutor have been as zealous had the defendant not been black?
