The irresponsible politics of the Dubai ports deal

The political reaction to the Dubai ports deal was American nativism at its worst, an embarrassment to the country. I was going to write about this, but Cassandra, our occasional partner in crime, so precisely eviscerates the culprits that even attempting to top her would be a waste of time.

Let's all hope the same energy and outrage can be mobilized to take control of the border with Mexico.

I made the point earlier, but I will restate it. This is hideous politics as Cassandra states, but it is also about FEAR and BIAS. The reason this makes political sense to both aisles in Congress is FEAR and BIAS.

This is what ALWAYS has happened in times of war. And to me the great irony is that "liberals" who theoretically should defend mortally against FEAR and BIAS played out practically like the Dubai deal instead quibble about FISA wiretapping of al qaeda switched calls and the Patriot Act (which they voted for overwhelmingly, by the way). Theory trumps practice. Form defeats substance. In politics.

They say leave Iran alone, no tough talk, they have a "right" to a nuclear weapon.

But then they say in the name of security we don't do business with Arabs. We don't trust them to operate a port.

The contrast is stark -- and of course utterly stupid. Profoundly unserious.

Perhaps this is why the American electorate has chosen wisely not to elect someone from Congress as President in quite a long time.

:)

And thank you, TH. But as you are no doubt well aware, I don't even pretent to hold a candle to you. That's why I had to scuttle back to my little corner of the blogosphere.

Actually I don't pretend either, even when I can type.

Looooong day. Finally sent my 5th tome off to the publisher today. I am *so* tired of proofing. By the time I get to comments here I can't be bothered.

Obviously :D

Nice opening paragraph in the WSJ today:

Dubai Ports World finally threw in the kaffiyah on its American operations yesterday, agreeing to sell them to a "U.S. entity." We hope that entity turns out to be Halliburton, if only for the torment that would cause certain eminences on Capitol Hill.

As TH would say, "Heh."
