Economic development, Palestinian style

The caption to this picture reads:
Palestinian gunmen pose inside an office of the Palestinian national telephone company after storming it in Rafah camp in southern Gaza Strip December 14, 2005. Gunmen on Wednesday briefly took over the offices of the Palestinian national telephone company and demanded the cancellation of some fees paid by the public for the installation of telephone lines, giving the company 48 hours to comply.

Well. That will certainly encourage economic development in Palestine. True, the occasional armed raid might improve the service from your local cable TV provider, but you have to figure that this isn't the best way to attract new investment capital.

There is an old saying that you "get what you pay for." Perhaps 20th century tools need not be in a 7th century society. For some silly reason I keep thinking that these people will get exactly what they deserve.
