Are the Iraqi insurgents building chemical weapons?
A major chemical production facility, suspected to have been built by insurgents, was uncovered by US forces during a raid this week in northern Iraq, the US military said on Saturday.
The raids took place early Tuesday near the northern city of Mosul, 370 kilometers (229 miles) from Baghdad, the military said, without giving the exact location of the chemical facility.
“The raids uncovered what technical experts assess to be a clandestine chemical production facility and storage sites,” it said in a statement.
However, the military had not determined what the rebels were producing there, or which insurgent group had set up the facility.
One is almost forced to wonder where the insurgents got the equipment and expertise to build a chemical production facility. We eagerly await news of the chemicals that were being produced there.

Actually, they are both insurgents and terrorists. Virtually all the insurgents are terrorists, but I certainly agree that the relatively small percentage who come from outside Iraq are only terrorists.

TH, I am appalled. People who target civilians are NOT insurgents. Period.

True, but we don't know who is doing what in Iraq. The attacks on civilians may be primarily coming from the jihadis, who are manifestly terrorists. The Sunni rejectionists may be hitting arguably more lawful targets. There have been plenty of attacks on military or other legitimate targets -- there are something like 30 attacks per day against U.S. troops even now, and many of the car bomb attacks have been against Iraqi police recruitment stations, which are less problematic than other targets.
