"Massive brain damage"

An autopsy on Terri Schiavo backed her husband's contention that she was in a persistent vegetative state, finding that she had massive and irreversible brain damage and was blind, the medical examiner's office said Wednesday. It also found no evidence that she was strangled or otherwise abused.

This will not, and should not, decide the arguments about whether the Schiavo case was handled properly by any of the parties involved (up to and including the United States Congress) in the absence of these findings. It also will not resolve any of the really knotty issues that define the boundaries of protectible human life. But it is a relief to know that Terry Schiavo in fact had no chance of recovery.
