The rewards of anti-Americanism
Colombian artist Fernando Botero's "Sitting Woman," a bronze sculpture made in 1976, was sold at auction for 688,000 dollars -- a record for a Botero sculpture.
Sold at Christie's late Wednesday, the sculpture went for the fourth highest price for a Latin American work for the auction house.
Would Botero's art be worth so much if he hadn't devoted the last year to bashing the United States?

I don't know that he wouldn't. He's been around for quite a while, and even Mario Vargas Llosa wrote a long essay praising him (of course, by then Botero had already done a "fat picture" of Vargas Llosa -- which VLl liked).

His stuff looks like it came out of Mad Magazine. Color me -- unimpressed.

Well, since Fausta is my source for virtually all matters Latin Amereican (perhaps evidence of the sheltered life that I lead), perhaps I am, er, wrong... ;)
