The New York Times has an
excellent front page article this morning on the hunt for bin Laden. It calls into question the extent of Pakistan's cooperation, and begs a question it neither asks nor answers: Have we coerced the government of Pakistan effectively to our side in the war on Islamist jihad? If not, are there means at our disposal to do so? America's vastly improved relationship with India is clearly part of our strategy to coerce Pakistan to help us in a war it would rather not fight, but is it enough? This is our most important question in South Asia.
I have suspected for a while that the US' close relation with Pakistan has been along the lines of the old adage: keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
