Read, or reread, Exodus

I just finished Leon Uris' famous epic novel of the founding of Israel, Exodus. Sure, it is a little dated and more than a little heavy-handed, but it reminds us why, and more importantly how, the Jews created the state that embodies their nation. I was particularly moved by the harrowing story of the rising of the Warsaw Ghetto, and the inspiring story of the kibbutzim and the greening of Palestine. Most importantly, the book does a tremendous job of illuminating the character of the sabras who built that country. If I had ever doubted it before, I now know that no suicide bomber will defeat the Israelis.
