Pop culture quiz

About three hours ago I got this email:

So I am sitting in a Turkish restaurant in London listening to travelling musicians play a song made popular by a guy who died in a plane crash in NW Iowa in a plane piloted by a guy buried two graves from my great-grandfather. That seems odd to me.

My correspondent's great-grandfather is buried in the Buena Vista County Cemetery.

What is the title of the song?

Odd choice of words, "made popular" rather than "written" or "performed."

American Pie?

I believe you are on to something.

"Peggy Sue" or some hit from Buddy Holly. "American Pie" was a song recounting the event, but wasn't preformed by anyone who was there (quite obviously). An interesting trivia aside - Waylon Jennings got "bumped" from that flight at the last minute.

La Bamba, by Ricky Valens

My wife says it was a folk song that he "made popular".

Ritchie Valens. Oops!

"La Bamba" it is!

That fateful last show took place at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake Iowa. My mom grew up in nearby Mason City and often went to dances there as a teenager. "La Bamba" is okay, but it's too bad those Turks weren't playing Buddy Holly's "Rave On" - now there's a really great tune.
