I had never thought of it this way:

Even in today's world of genetic testing, a husband is financially liable to support his wifes children, even if it turns out they are not his. It is very interesting, sometimes, what our lawmakers think is important and what they think is not worht their time to address.

I'm sure the reason is similar to the reason why Republicans do not want to allow women to evict unwanted parasites from their property at any time.
